It’s Red Ribbon Month in White Plains

We are part of The Trust Project
Red ribbons adorn lamp posts and railings in White Plains with the message “Drug Free and Proud.”

White Plains Cares Coalition is celebrating Red Ribbon Month this October with activities planned in city neighborhoods supporting a drug free community and celebrating positive youth development.

Red Ribbon is a national event honoring Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, a Drug Enforcement Administration special agent who was killed in 1985 by drug traffickers. Parent groups embraced the campaign, and in 1988, Congress proclaimed the first U.S. Red Ribbon Campaign. The campaign has been implemented in school districts and communities across the nation and serves as a reminder of the continued efforts required to safeguard our children from environmental risk factors. More than 80 million people celebrate Red Ribbon across the country, a press release issued by Mayor Tom Roaches office said.

The statement from the mayor’s office further said: City of White Plains is proud to support the efforts of the White Plains Cares Coalition and the Youth Bureau’s Project Hope as they collaborate with the White Plains School District, Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson, Boy Scouts of America, City of White Plains Department of Public Safety, YWCA, YMCA, City of White Plains Department of Public Safety, Westchester County District Attorney’s Office, City of White Plains Parks & Recreation Department, Civil Air Patrol, POW’R Against Tobacco Coalition, Student Assistance Services, and the White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations, as well as corporate partners including Royal Palace Indian Restaurant, Straight A’s Education Supplies, and Microsoft, to bring this event to life. This will be the 8th year that the City of White Plains will celebrate Red Ribbon Month.
