Celebrate and participate in this year’s Earth Day with these events and programs around the county
Good morning! Today is Tuesday, April 19, and you are reading today’s section of Examiner+, a digital newsmagazine serving Westchester, Putnam, and the surrounding Hudson Valley.
The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22 in 1970. Nowadays more than 190 countries and one billion people take part in the celebration. According to the Earth Day website, “Today, Earth Day is widely recognized as the largest secular observance in the world, marked by more than a billion people every year as a day of action to change human behavior and create global, national, and local policy changes.”
The theme this year is “Invest in Our Planet.”In Westchester County, events are held throughout April to celebrate the Earth and take care of it. Listed below are just some of the many events happening this year.
Pitch in for Parks began on April 18 and runs through April 23. Volunteers are sought to help clean up the parks for the season. No experience is needed. Just bring your enthusiasm and be prepared to rake, plant flower beds, and more at locations around the county including Lenoir Preserve, Lasdon Arboretum, Edith Read Wildlife Sanctuary, Wilson’s Woods Park, Muscoot Farm, Saxon Woods Park, Bronx River Reservation. Glen Island Park, Blue Mountain Reservation, and Tibbetts Brook Park. Reservations are required so the right tools are on hand for the volunteers.

Green Ossining’s Earth Day Festival will be held at Louis Engel Waterfront Park on Saturday, April 23, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The whole family can visit artisan vendors, enjoy food and live music with views of the Hudson River, and learn how to live a more sustainable life. Live music will include Blue Basement, Claremont School Chorus, Julie Corbalis, Mike & Miriam Risko and the Mike Risko Band, Shovel Ready String Band, KJ Denhert, and the Stella Blues Band.

Earth Day Evening Hike at Leon Levy Preserve begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 22. Enjoy an evening hike in the 1,000-acre preserve in South Salem which was established in 1994.

Earth Day Plant and Seed Swap at Vintage and Vine will bring gardeners together for a plant and seed swap on April 22 from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Vintage and Vine is sponsoring the event at the Jefferson Valley Mall in Yorktown Heights. Be sure to have information about the plants and seeds you are swapping so other gardeners can identify them.

Great Saw Mill River Cleanup will be held at several locations along the river on Saturday, April 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Join volunteers to clean garbage and debris from the river in locations including Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Hastings, Irvington, and Yonkers. Be sure to register for your location.
