Hen Hud Appoints New Superintendent of Schools
The Hendrick Hudson Board of Education ended its search for a new superintendent of schools last week by appointing Joseph Hochreiter to a three-year term, effective July 1.
The selection of Hochreiter, who is currently serving as superintendent of schools in the Elmira CitySchool District, was the final result of a process that began last fall and included significant community input.
“The Board of Education interviewed a number of candidates, and while all had very impressive backgrounds, Mr. Hochreiter stood out as the best leader for our schools,” said Board of Education President Mary Pat Briggi. “We were impressed with his energy and educational philosophy, by his sense of optimism and enthusiasm, and ability to inspire our diverse group of stakeholders. We look forward to working with him in the coming years.”
During his stint as deputy superintendent and superintendent of schools at Elmira since 2006, Hochreiter helped improve student achievement, authored numerous grants and spearheaded the development of a multi-million dollar capital project that included $14 million in technology upgrades for all schools.
Hochreiter began his public education career as a special education teacher in social studies in Rochester and later served as a middle school assistant principal and a high school principal. He has published numerous articles on educational leadership and has been a presenter at many national conferences.
“I am honored that the Hendrick Hudson board has selected me for this important role at such a critical time,” Hochreiter said. “The district has an outstanding record of accomplishment in academics and co-curricular areas. My hope is to continue to build on the excellent work that has been done and provide visionary leadership to ensure Hendrick Hudson becomes a world class school district and fulfills the mission of its strategic plan to help each student maximize his or her potential.”
Dr. Brian Monahan has served as interim superintendent since last July and will continue until the end of the school year.
“Dr. Monahan has served our district with distinction during our transition year and the Board of Education is extremely grateful for the calm, warmth and stability he has brought us this year,” Briggi said. “Dr. Monahan has impressed us with his ability to communicate and connect with our entire community and has been responsive to all stakeholders’ needs during this challenging year.”
