Hand Grenade Found in Cortlandt Park
On Tuesday, May 22, the New York State Police in Cortlandt responded to the wooded area behind the Sunset Park Little League field in the town of Cortlandt, following a report of the discovery of a hand grenade.
Two local residents who had been walking on a path in the wooded area behind the field made the discovery just after 4 p.m. State Police units responded to the scene and confirmed the discovery. A State Police Bomb Disposal Unit responded and safely removed the item.
The hand grenade showed signs of rust and wear and appeared to be many years old.
The area where the discovery was made was checked by State Police personnel, including the use of a State Police Canine Dog trained in explosives detection. The area was cleared and the park was reopened to the public.
Investigation into the discovery including when the device was left, and by whom, is continuing.
