GOP Claims to Support the Police, But Ignore Trump’s January 6 Pardons

Promises made, promises kept! President Trump promised to pardon the folks who were found guilty and jailed for various crimes committed as they attempted to stop the certification of the 2020 election on Jan. 6, 2021, at Trump’s behest.

We all watched the heinously violent attack in real time on that terrible day and have seen the footage many times since. We watched as brave members of the Capitol police, overwhelmingly outnumbered, were brutalized as they tried to fend off the attackers, protect the members of Congress inside and safeguard our democracy. Five police officers died as a result of that insurrection, and at least 140 more were injured. Many are still suffering physically and emotionally from the attack.

Not long ago, the Republican party was proudly the party of “law and order.” Republican officials on the local and national levels make a big show of “backing the blue.” And yet their response to Trump’s pardon of these violent criminals is essentially one big collective shrug.

Our own congressman, Rep. Mike Lawler, tries to have it both ways; he disagrees with pardoning these violent criminals, but he continues to support Donald Trump. I don’t understand how you can claim to “back the blue” and still support the man who set cop killers free.
