Gearity Apparent Winner over Mayor Hanauer in Ossining Primary
Ossining Village Trustee Victoria Gearity defeated eight-year Mayor William Hanauer in a Democratic primary Tuesday, according to unofficial results posted by the Westchester County Board of Elections.
With 13 of 17 districts reporting, Gearity, a first-term trustee who was endorsed by the Democratic Committee, had 436 votes (58%) to 313 (42%) for Hanauer.
With no Republican candidate running for mayor, the winner of the Democratic primary is considered to have the upper hand in the November 4 election. Gearity is also running on the Independence line, while Hanauer will appear on the Working Families line.
Hanauer said he was the impetus behind the village’s uptick in economic development and cited the Harbor Square luxury apartments and the Avalon affordable housing complex; two development projects that he feels will revitalize the village.
Gearity disagreed, “What needs to happen, in order for downtown Ossining to flourish, is we need to adopt a ‘how can we help you?’ attitude for anyone who wants to open a business downtown. She believes the village’s focus on residential housing has contributed to overcrowding in the Ossining school system and she would like to see it slow down.
