Field Hockey Notebook: Lakeland Storms Put Valley, 4-0, in matchup of Class B Titans

It was supposed to be a prelude to the Section 1 Class B championship this November, but it turned out to be just another ho-hum win for Lakeland High. The three-time defending NYS Class B champion Hornets posted a convincing 4-0 victory over host Putnam Valley last Friday, doing so without the benefit of a top-flight corners game.

“We’ve still got work to do, I’m not happy with our execution on our corners,” Lakeland Coach Sharon Sarsen said. “PV’s goalie (Tori Ferraro) was missing, and they will be a different team the next time we are playing them. I don’t count them out. But we will be focusing on productivity on offensive corners.”

Lakeland did score twice off corners and did generate the bulk of the attack. Felicia Costanzo, Kristen Conroy (assisted by Dana Bozek), Bozek (assisted by Gaby Celetano) and Rebecca Bard (assisted by Gianna Bensaia) scored for the Hornets, who led 2-0 at the half and kicked up the defense a notch.

“Our forwards and mids have been working really hard to make sure that everyone is an offensive weapon,” senior tri-captain Rebecca Bard said. “We are going to try and do our best to not let those two goals in a game happen again.

Lakeland Mairead Hourihan (4 saves) earned the shutout as the Hornets stood tall before her. Coach Sarsen was impressed with some aspects of play but knows there is room for improvement.

“I know Rye is good, but we haven’t seen them,” Sarsen said. “I know Sara Gonzalez’s Harrison team is undefeated, and Nyack is good too. Not sure which team is best, but they will all be gunning for us in the end, including Putnam Valley.”

KEEP AN EYE ON SOMERS:

Somers 3, RCK 0: The host Tuskers saw Christina Jocelyn score a goal and an assist while Taylor Borgelt and Danielle Colavito each added a goal. Keeper Claire Johnson made 12 saves for the youthful Tuskers.

“My team is coming on,” Somers Coach Colleen Carney said. “We’re very young in spots, but give us another year and I think we’ll surprise some teams.”

In a Somers’ 2-0 win Panas, Megan Sweeney and Borgelt each scored once.

CARMEL MAKING GAINS:

The Rams’ greatest asset during their 6-1-1 start has been their speed. Led by senior Cassie Schüttrumpf and Kaitlin Murphy, Carmel plans to take it one step farther this year after losing to Ossining in last year’s Class A semis.

Schuttrumpf, who is mulling offers from Ithaca, Montclair and Susquehanna, had two assists in a 3-2 win over host Putnam Valley last Monday, while Murphy banged the boards for a hat trick. The two seem to have some chemistry working for Coach Andrea Caso.

Madison Hoyos and AnnMarie Spica scored for PV. Erin McCrudden set up both Tiger scores. Alyssa Valdez made four saves for Carmel and Sam Cunningham had five saves for Putnam Valley.
