Field Hockey Notebook: Carmel, Manecky Trip up Mahopac; Lakeland Remains Unbeaten
Three-time reigning NYS champion Lakeland clearly remains the team to beat in Class B while Carmel is currently taking a “Why Not Us” approach in Class A where reigning champion Mamaroneck (11-1) remains the team to beat.
Carmel 2, Mahopac 1: Jamie Manecky scored her second goal of the game early on in the second half for the Rams after Courtney Shea gave the Indians a 1-0 first-half lead. Carmel improved to 8-2-1 and looks like a shoe-in for the league title.
Carmel 2, Yorktown 1: Manecky scored her third goal in two games and Caitlin Murphy added a mark for the visiting Rams. Jenna Gammer scored for Yorktown, which now sits at 6-4-1.
Mahopac 6, Brewster 0: Visiting Brewster has fallen on hard times, as evidenced by Mikaela DiBello’s hat trick and Sarah Quarto’s two talies. Kylie Robertson (three saves) and Gabby Anderson combined for five saves and a shutout. Brewster goalie Ava Faitakes (18 saves) was under attack.
Putnam Valley 3, North Salem 0: PV Sophomore Annmarie Spica has been on a tear, scoring all three goals. Sam Cunningham had four saves in the shutout.
PV 2, Somers 0: Spica and Stephanie Wagner (from Spica) each scored a goal while Tori Ferraro (4 saves) and Sam Cunningham (2) combined on the shutout.
“What an exciting game,” PV Coach Ashley Valentine said! “Annmarie Spica earned one goal off a scramble in front of the cage. Then with 42 seconds left on the clock at the end of the second period, she dished the ball to teammate Stephanie Wagner, our freshman, to complete the win!”
Spica finished the week with goals. Putnam Valley also toasted Panas, 4-0, and now sits at 8-4, but can’t catch undefeated Lakeland (12-0) for the league title.
“This has been an incredible week of field hockey for the PV Tigers,” Valentine said. “With younger players like Stephanie Wagner, a freshman, and Annmarie Spica, a sophomore, following in the wake of the upperclassmen, I can see that the determination to win is stronger than ever. Annmarie Spica has proved herself as a serious offensive threat. In the backfield, senior captain Mel Wagner has been maintaining and strengthening her defense every day, with help from goalkeepers Tori Ferraro, a senior captain, and Sam Cunningham, a junior with a lot of heart and promise. The team has found a definite rhythm, and it’s producing a pretty sweet melody.
Lakeland 9, Panas 0: Abby Murdock hit the hat trick and Steph Scala scored twice for the three-time defending champion Hornets (12-0). Alex Halpin had one save for the Hornets. Amanda Santos (13) and Dawn Bruzzese combined for 16 saves for the Panthers.
“We’ve still got a ton of work to do on our corners,” Lakeland Coach Sharon Sarsen said. “We’re not there yet. We’re doing certain things very well, but out corner play has to improve.”
