Mike Lawler has been a failure in representing the interests of Congressional District 17. This is especially apparent in the realm of healthcare.

Unlike Mondaire Jones, his predecessor who is running again for the seat and is a strong proponent of Medicare for All, Lawler inspires little confidence that he is even interested in protecting the coverage that we already have. While at times he claims that he does not support cutting Medicare, he was still willing to go on Fox Business in October and declare that, long-term, we need to “deal” with Medicare, as well as Social Security, implying the necessity to cut these programs. It is impossible to believe him when he says that he is committed to protecting Medicare.

Lawler has also opposed making insulin more affordable and voted against protecting Medicare’s vital COVID coverage. While in Congress, Jones voted for the Inflation Reduction Act, which capped insulin prices for Medicare recipients and allowed Medicare to negotiate drug prices. Meanwhile, Lawler has never taken a significant step to help relieve his constituents of the financial burdens of our for-profit healthcare system, and has been silent on Donald Trump’s promise to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Mondaire Jones has a vision for the future of healthcare policy. Recognizing that we won’t get to universal healthcare overnight, he sees the importance of immediate action to expand Medicare, continue lowering the costs of prescription drugs for all Americans and pass a public option. He is the clear choice for NY-17.
