Eagle Scout Honors Memory of Fallen Detective
Town of Carmel resident and Eagle Scout Robert Geoghegan was joined by town, county and state officials on Saturday, Sept. 29 at the dedication ceremony for the memorial he installed at Camarda Park in memory of Det. John Falcone, who died in the line of duty while serving with the Poughkeepsie Police Department. Falcone grew up in Carmel.
Geoghegan completed the project, which included installing a flag pole, a bronze plague and a seating area, in his efforts to earn the top rank in the Boy Scouts of America and to memorialize Falcone. Before beginning his project, he contacted Falcone’s parents who still reside in Carmel to ask for their blessing in erecting the memorial, which they gave.
Last April, Geoghegan, a member of Carmel Boy Scout Troop One, attended a Carmel Town Board meeting to present his plan.
At that meeting, Carmel Town Supervisor Kenneth Schmitt commended Geoghegan for taking on the project.
“It’s really an honor that your project is going to be dedicated to Det. John Falcone. I worked with Det. Falcone when he worked for the Carmel Police Department…John was a true professional from every aspect of law enforcement. He was tragically killed last year while performing his duty and he actually saved a young child from the arms of the assailant. Prior to him losing his life, he saved a life,” Schmitt said to Geoghegan . “To honor his memory in this way is a credit to you.”
