County Senior Citizens Hall of Fame Honors 46
Several residents from northern Westchester were among the 46 who were inducted into the Westchester County Senior Citizens Hall of Fame last week.
“The Senior Citizens Hall of Fame has been a tradition in Westchester for three decades,” said County Executive Rob Astorino. “Our honorees are extraordinary. Individually and as a group, they strengthen our communities and are true role models for us all.”
Five members of the Class of 2012 were given special recognition, including Rev. Jeannette Phillips of Peekskill and Barry Singer of Somers.
Phillips is executive vice president of Hudson River Health Care and has served as its chairwoman and outreach coordinator. She was ordained a deacon and then an elder of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and works extensively with community youth. She has been an advocate for food pantries and access to affordable health care, housing and education for the disenfranchised and those afflicted with HIV/AIDS.
Singer is a retired attorney and mortgage broker. He was co-founder and president of At Home in Somers, founding president of the Somers Rotary Club and chairman of the town’s Affordable Housing Board. He is active on boards at Heritage Hills and was a founding board member and vice president of the Mid-Westchester YM-YWHA. Two years ago, the county’s Board of Legislators proclaimed June 28, 2010 as Barry Singer Day in recognition of his long community involvement.
Other area seniors honored during a luncheon in Tarrytown were: William Golub of Armonk; Joseph Lalak of Briarcliff Manor; Dr. William Flank of Chappaqua; Marie Turner of Cortlandt; Laura Seitz and Carol Shanesy of Croton-on-Hudson; Ray Procious of Mohegan Lake; Lenore Safian of Mount Kisco; Lina Spedaliere of Pleasantville; John Caralyus of Purdys; and Salvatore Amuso, Robert Schavrien and Theresa Tinger of Yorktown.
The Senior Citizens Hall of Fame is sponsored by the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for the Aging Services, the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services and the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation.
