Cortlandt Gas Station Owner Pays for Price Gouging after Sandy
The owner of a gas station in Cortlandt has agreed to pay $20,000 in penalties for price gouging in the wake of Hurricane Sandy last year.
State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced the settlement with Sammy Eljamal on Thursday. Eljamal, who owns several gas stations in Westchester, was cited for raising gas prices 85 cents a gallon at his 202 Gas Mart Shell station on Route 202.
The penalties Eljamal were levied also cover excessive prices he charged at stations in Tarrytown, Ardsley and Yonkers.
“As thousands of New Yorkers sat in line for hours waiting to buy gasoline during the state of emergency created by Hurricane Sandy, some crooked station owners increased their retail prices by excessive and illegal amounts,” Schneiderman remarked. “Today, we are continuing to send the message that ripping off New Yorkers during a natural disaster is against the law and that those who engage in illegal price gouging will be held accountable.”
