Cortlandt Enters the Social Media World on Facebook
The Town of Cortlandt has become one of the few municipalities in Westchester County to launch a Facebook.
During a press conference last week at Cortlandt Town Hall, Supervisor Linda Puglisi said Facebook was another mechanism for town government to communicate information to residents and other interested parties.
“We want to give out as much information as we can. It’s endless opportunities,” Puglisi said. “It provides yet another way or venue to disseminate information to our community and faster. We are very excited to offer this service to our residents and businesses and we encourage them to ‘like us.’”
Cortlandt joins the Village of Mount Kisco and the City of Yonkers as the only municipalities in Westchester to take advantage of a social media outlet that reaches hundreds of millions of users worldwide.
Only designated town officials will be able to post items on the town’s Facebook and no public comments will be allowed.
“We were concerned if we had comments on Facebook people may want a response quickly on the weekend and they wouldn’t be able to get it,” said Puglisi, who noted that option may be explored in the future.
Town officials feel Facebook will be ideal to post emergency notices during inclement weather, recreation game cancellations and other breaking events. In addition, town meetings, press conferences and town produced cable programs will be streamed on Facebook.
“Everyone is using Facebook. It’s in the palm of their hands. So why not use it to get residents the information they need?” said Matt Logerfo, the town’s technical support specialist.
Meanwhile, Puglisi also reminded residents that, based on popular demand, Wi-Fi service is now available at Cortlandt’s Charles Cook Pool.
