Cortlandt Closes $2.75M Deal for 100 Acres in Verplanck
The Town of Cortlandt officially silenced “the buzz” last week by purchasing a 100-acre parcel in Verplanck from Con Edison for $2.75M.
More than a year ago, the Cortlandt Town Board unanimously voted to block a proposed high electric converter station with an around the clock loud buzzing sound near the Hudson River by agreeing to buy the land, which includes a former quarry that often attracted trespassers who enjoyed diving and swimming in the manmade water hole.
“This is an exciting day for our Cortlandt residents,” Cortlandt Supervisor Linda Puglisi said Thursday. “We are now adding to our properties we own along the Hudson River for public use.”
In the hamlet of Verplanck, Cortlandt’s inventory includes Steamboat Dock, Cortlandt Waterfront Park, Veteran’s Memorial Park, a nature preserve and boat docks utilized for small watercraft and the Cortlandt Community Rowing Association.
Cortlandt’s newest property is adjacent to the Hudson and in the vicinity of an existing sports field and a small beach area.
The Town Board is currently considering several uses for the site, including additional recreational fields, a walking/jogging/bicycle trail path, a dog park, an enhanced beach area and consolidating the town’s Department of Environmental Services operations headquarters on the northern corner.
