Climate Change Superfund Act Will Do Nothing But Increase Costs in NY

In response to Marilyn Elie’s letter praising the “fine” imposed on the major oil companies (“Climate Change Superfund Act Will Save New York Taxpayers Billions,” December 31-January 7), to suggest that New York drivers and utility consumers will not be paying that fine is absurd.

Aside from the fact that there is ongoing intense disagreement as to the contribution of fossil fuel consumption on the atmosphere and climate change (formerly global cooling and global warming), and aside from the legality of the imposition of such a fine, if paid, the companies will factor that cost into the price of the fuel they sell in New York. We will pay more to drive and to heat our homes. Con Edison will pay more for the fuel it consumes to provide electricity at an increased cost to us.

Any remaining manufacturers in New York that burn fossil fuels to make their products will increase the cost of their products, to say nothing about the trucking costs to be passed on to customers for all things delivered. Having probably been involved in the process of closing Indian Point (she moved to the Town of Cortlandt in 2010), requiring more electricity to be produced with fossil fuels, I think Ms. Elie deserves a commendation and a big consumer “thank you” for her analytical skill.

Letter writer Wendy Holtzman wants Congressman Mike Lawler to tell the Trump family how to run its business, particularly investments made or initiated while Donald Trump was out of office. With the personal wealth he now has from his interest in the Truth Social website, I doubt he has any interest, intellectual or financial, in the membership or greens’ fees of a golf course in Oman.

President Trump has in the past made all the required financial disclosures as President and private citizen. Remember that nothing came out of the disclosure of his personal tax returns? She doesn’t like Trump or Lawler. Thank you, anyhow, for casting your votes in their recent elections.
