Class B Grid Notebook: Croton Earns a Starr in 29-22 Win over Irvington; Put Valley Falls, 7-0
NYS runner-up Croton-Harmon improved to 3-0 on the Section 1 Class B grid circuit last weekend while Putnam Valley fell to 0-3 and saw its playoff chances perilously close to dashed.
After its 29-22 win over Irvington, 10th-ranked Croton-Harmon (3-0) will now prepare for its biggest regular season challenge in quite some time as it travels to face No.7 Our Lady of Lourdes (3-0), Friday 7 p.m. It is a rematch of last year’s Class B sectional championship, which the Tigers won 21-7, before reaching the state finals.
Croton averted a Week 3 disaster when speedy Alex Starr returned an 80-yard kickoff for a touchdown with 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Croton boss John “Big Cat” Catano is likely to crack a mean whip on the Tigers this week as he seeks to minimize mistakes.
Croton QB Ben Gelfand had 87 yards and a TD. Matt Gennarelli (10), Alex Bowser (10) and Nick Grous (8) led the team in tackles.
Putnam Valley, which saw junior Garrett Ayling record seven tackles and a sack, will play at Edgemont (3-0), 1:30 p.m. Erik Godinho, Adam Mirabel, Alex bronzo, John Meagle and Mike Walsh (INT) each had six solo tackles, while Ryan Dunphy had five. Ryan Yetter recorded his third sack of the season.
