City of White Plains and YMCA Join Forces to Create Swim Team
The City of White Plains and the White Plains YMCA have joined together to provide city residents the opportunity to join the Citywide White Plains Summer Competitive Swim Team. The team will compete in the prestigious Westchester County Association Summer League. Members of the team must be between the ages of 6 and 18 years old and either be a resident of the City of White Plains or a member of the of the White Plains YMCA. Those interested must try-out for the team. Try-outs will be held on Wednesdays, May 25 and June 1 and Friday, June 3 at 4:30 p.m. at the White Plains YMCA, 250 Mamaroneck Avenue.
In announcing the new venture, Mayor Tom Roach said, “This summer swim team is an outgrowth of our highly successful “Jump In and Swim” program, which aims to give all White Plains children, as well as adults, the opportunity to learn basic water safety and swimming skills. Based on the enthusiasm we have seen from kids during our Jump In and Swim activities, I anticipate that this team will also be successful.”
“The White Plains YMCA is pleased to partner with the City of White Plains in developing the 2016 Summer Swim Team. Swimming is a healthy, “lifetime” activity. It promotes fitness and develops self-discipline, self-confidence and most importantly IT’S FUN!! The friendships developed and the skills learned could be something that will carry on for a lifetime. Our quality coaching team, under the direction of our new Aquatics Director Terrance Ewuell, is looking forward to an exciting summer,” added Tom Hay, Executive Director of the White Plains YMCA.”
Recreation and Parks Commissioner Wayne Bass said, “We see participation in our recreation swim program growing each year. Parents are seeking more for their children. What a tremendous opportunity for our residents who want to train and swim competitively over the summer.”
