Lime POP! Gose
Soul Brewing Company
Pleasantville
914.800.7685 • soulbrewingco.com
Pronounced Goze-uh, this German-style beer is a low ABV beer sour wheat beer traditionally brewed with salt and coriander.
“In our interpretation,” begins Allen Wallace, founder and brewmaster of Soul Brewing Company, “we add fresh lime zest and juice to the fermented beer, which complements the tartness and combined with sea salt creates a beer that echoes the flavors of a Margarita.”
Although a Gose is intended to be a refreshing beer for warm weather, this one can be enjoyed throughout the year.
Best Pie in Town Blueberry Black Sour
Diner Brew Co.
New Rochelle
914.229.3472 • dinerbrewco.com
A perfect American staple, you can now get a pie and an alcoholic beverage combined into one. This is a super jammy and tart sour beer bursting with blueberry and blackberry flavors. Its aromatic malt brings out notes of graham cracker crust. It will taste as if you’re really drinking a diner pie. It’s a liquid pie!
Snyder Bier
Captain Lawrence Brewing Company
Elmsford
914.741.2337 • captainlawrencebrewing.com
What goes best with beer? Pretzels! The snackfood company Snyder’s of Hanover has teamed up with the local Captain Lawrence Brewing Company to combine the already perfect pairing of pretzels and beer.
This lager is brewed with the “unofficial snack of Oktoberfest” to put a “fresh-baked” twist on a classic. Its malty flavor is elevated by notes of slow-baked Snyder’s Hanover pretzels. You might just feel as if you’re in Germany.
Japanese Style Lager
Broken Bow Brewery
Tuckahoe
914.268.0900 • brokenbowbrewery.com
Modeled after a Japanese Rice Lager, this Westchester version is brewed with rice and contains a subtle sweetness that’s balanced with slight hop forwardness. This makes for a crisp, light, and refreshing finish.
Broken Bow has tons of fun with creating international lagers that are true to style. In fact, the brewery goes to great pains to ensure authenticity — they use tanks that are originally from Japan that still have Japanese writing on them.
As they say in Japan, kanpai (cheers)!
PDX to JFK IPA
Wolf and Warrior
White Plains
914.368.8617 • wolfandwarrior.com
It was a long-term collaboration waiting to happen. Michael Chiltern of Wolf and Warrior met the owner of Portland, Oregon’s Migration Brewing at Syracuse University twenty-five years ago, becoming good friends. Now, they both own breweries on opposite sides of the country.
When getting together to brew the beer in July, the plane ticket read “PDX -> JFK” for the flight out. “The owner brought three experimental hop varieties from Yakima Chief Ranches for this beer,” explains Chiltern. “We’re the only brewery on the east coast as of yet to brew with them.”
Using some top-secret experimental hops from YCH hops, the beer combines nicely with pine aromas and hints of pineapple, berries, and citrus fruits. There’s also a snap of nice bitterness to finish it off.
