Chappaqua Summer Concert Series Begins Wednesday Evening
One of the pleasures of summer is being able to sit outside with friends and family on a warm evening, have something to eat and listen to a free concert.
For more than 25 years, residents in and around New Castle have been able to come out and enjoy that simple comfort.
This summer is no different. On Wednesday evening, the summer concert series sponsored by Music in Chappaqua returns for four consecutive weeks of toe-tapping music kicking off with Tramps Like Us, the popular Bruce Springsteen cover bandm at the Recreation Field gazebo on South Greeley Avenue. Festivities for each evening begin at 7 p.m.
“It’s really all about enjoying a fun evening and listening to a concert,” said Bob Snyder, New Castle’s Recreation and Parks superintendent.
This year, the town received sponsorship assistance from the Chappaqua-Millwood Chamber of Commerce. The $10,000 the chamber raised insured that there would be four concerts, similar to previous years. Plus, the partnership enabled organizers to book a couple of bands that previously might have been out of reach, said Rob Greenstein, co-founder of the chamber of commerce.
For the remaining weeks, the concert series will feature the Chappaqua Orchestra on July 17, One Hot Night, a Neil Diamond cover band, on July 24 and Holla Back, a 1980s tribute band on July 31. The variety of music, food and activities for children could attract a wider audience to the downtown than in some previous years, Greenstein said
“We think this is going to be a great series and we’re hoping to get people from the surrounding towns to come out and join us,” he said.
This year there will be food vendors at all the concerts in case a commuter wants to come directly from the train if there isn’t enough time to go home and have something to eat. Vendors are Gail Patrick’s Cafe, Le Jardin du Roi, King Street Restaurant and Bar and Quaker Hill Tavern. Sherry B Dessert Studio will be on hand to sell ice cream.
Snyder said that a children’s play area has been arranged that is safe for youngsters while mom and dad listen to the music. A variety of local merchants will also be showcased along with pre-concert activities such as wine tastings and happy hours.
In case of inclement weather, the concerts will be moved to the Chappaqua Public Library auditorium. If there are any questions regarding a possible move indoors, the public should call the Recreation and Parks Department special events hotline at 914-238-2540.
