Cathy’s Hair Room, Chappaqua
Women in search of the perfect cut and color should look no further than Cathy’s Hair Room, an intimate, light-filled salon in Chappaqua that celebrates the unique characteristics of every client and brings out the best in each one.
Owner Cathy Hair heads up the salon, which includes daughters Victoria Adams, a hair stylist, and Nicole Hair, who serves as business manager. Some of her stylists have been with her for 15 years, along with a crop of newer talent to help make this friendly salon a great local find.
As a young girl, Hair watched her now 95-year-old Aunt Theresa cut and style hair. One of five children, she remembers her aunt coming over to the family’s Yorktown home and cutting her siblings’ hair.
“She was my inspiration,” said Hair, who has owned and operated salons throughout northern Westchester for more than 20 years, all under the name Cathy’s Hair Room.
A perfectionist at heart, Hair went into the business directly after her training, initially at the Vidal Sassoon cosmetology school in New York City and later with other top stylists.
“Right from the beginning, I wanted to make sure I was going to get the best education I could and stay on the cutting edge,” said Hair, cognizant of the fast-changing nature of the salon industry and the need to adapt quickly to the trends.
At Cathy’s Hair Room, the focus is on meeting each client’s individual needs. That can be found in a unique service called the “Self-Tour Consultation,” which considers the shape of the face, skin color, height and other defining characteristics.
“The idea is to create the perfect style for our clients,” Hair said.
Stylists are trained to determine what color and cut is best for each person. Their expertise makes all the difference, said Hair, especially if the end result not only matches a woman’s physical qualities but her personality as well.
Hair also enjoys working with a team that prides itself on being sensitive to clients’ needs. There are no keratin straightening treatments because Hair believes the chemicals used in the process jeopardize the health of her stylists and customers.
Instead, Hair and her staff use a safer alternative that contains no harmful chemicals. Hair’s father, a former chemist, educated her about many of the unsafe hair care industry products. So she uses the MainTamer straightening system that still leaves hair smooth, manageable, shiny and straight.
“It’s an all-natural hair care system; we’ve seen great results from it,” she said. “There is nothing harmful in any of the products I use.”
Hair’s customers rave about the Iden line, which contains bee propolis, a resinous mixture that honey bees collect from tree buds, sap flows and other botanical sources. The Iden line also contains botanical extracts to promote healthy hair and scalp.
Other services offered at the salon include haircuts and blow-drys for men, women and children, a complete line of coloring services, including single and double process color, glaze/toner, full highlights, dimensional highlights and top lights. Hair also applies human hair extensions, in addition to providing a range of bridal services, special occasion hair design services and make-up application.
“We really believe in wellness for the hair and making people feel good about themselves,” Hair said. “For me, it’s gratifying to do a transformation on all of my clients.”
Current specials at the salon include a 15 percent reduction on any haircut or chemical treatment for students who show a valid ID on Thursdays and a 10 percent reduction for seniors who visit the salon on Tuesday.
The salon, located at 16 S. Bedford Rd., Suite 1E, is open Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
