I am writing to express my support for Trustee John Curzio as he runs for re-election on the Carmel Board of Education. The election will be on Tuesday, May 21.

John Curzio is the only school board member who has always been willing to fight against the unsustainable budgeting practices of the Carmel School District, and as previous letters to the editor have mentioned, he was chastised by his fellow board members at the time and subjected to a misguided and unsuccessful removal hearing. Of course, this failed effort was also expensive; more than $20,000 of taxpayer money that the board decided to waste. I’m sure they wouldn’t have spent their own money on such a ridiculous effort to try to remove an elected official for advocating for our community.

Time has proven that John Curzio was right. He was also the most vocal board member in saving kindergarten and sports for the upcoming school year. This advocacy shows that Mr. Curzio always places the interests of students first.

John Curzio is an important and valuable voice on the school board. He is the liaison between the school district and other local governments. He is also well-versed in education law, and it is evident by watching the school board meetings that his colleagues often defer to Mr. Curzio for his advice.

Trustee Curzio is very accessible. He always responds to e-mails, one of the few board members to do so. He also provides his personal cell phone number to the community, again, one of the only board members to do so.

It shouldn’t be left unsaid that Mr. Curzio is very community oriented, present at many local events and is a NYPD sergeant.

I want a school board member who is unafraid to speak his mind, even when he must stand alone, for the purpose of representing the people. On Tuesday, May 21, please send a strong message to support our community’s interests by voting to re-elect John Curzio as Carmel school board trustee.
