Business Profile: Pulse Pharmacy, White Plains
Isaac Murdakh and his wife Julie run one of the true Mom and Pop Shops in White Plains. Pulse Pharmacy is a family run, local business, dedicated to customized and personal service, complete with free daily delivery.
Isaac and Julie were high school sweet hearts and they both pursued Isaac’s interest in pharmacology, each receiving doctorates in the field.
When you walk into their shop at 288 Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains (located at the ground-floor at the Jefferson), the first thing you notice is that the pharmacy business is priority, sundries are an after thought, and that’s just the way they want it.
Located directly across from a CVS, Isaac comments that the larger retail establishment only has a pharmacy section, being smaller he is able to customize for customers’ needs and make his business far more personal.
“My goal is to make the pharmacy, they way it used to be,” Isaac says. He remembers back to stories told about his great grandfather in Russia, who was the local pharmacist. “Everyone went to him for advice about everything,” Isaac explains.
Isaac is named after his great grandfather, but the family connection doesn’t stop there, his mother and uncle are also pharmacists. It seems that having an innate sense for the business is in the blood, which might be why their motto is: “We care for your every beat.”
Pulse Pharmacy opened five months ago and is already in demand in the neighborhood.
Isaac receives deliveries from a wholesaler twice each day and is able to fill any prescription on the same day it is requested. All deliveries are also made on the same day, in the evening.
“As long as a customer has placed the order during regular business hours, they will have their prescription that same day,” Isaac explains. ‘We deliver everywhere in White Plains and will go outside the area if necessary. Customers should call to discuss their specific needs.”
Access to the store is easy; there is metered parking out front and free parking at the back of the building. Once a customer has placed a prescription, however, everything goes online and refills can be ordered electronically, even through the prescribing doctor. If a prescription is nearing expiration, Julie is ready to send a reminder and find out if a refill is necessary.
Isaac and Julie will help customers find the best priced version of any medication they may require. Isaac claims his prices are very competitive anyway, but he will take time with a customer to help find the best way to keep insurance co-payments as low as possible.
The couple also does compounding for specific formulations. If a patient can’t take a certain medication in pill form, they can create a liquid version for example. They also have an assortment of flavors to make medications more palatable. These are intended for children, but anyone can have a flavor added and some of the flavors are Kosher. In fact, Isaac and Julie have enrolled in a free vitamin program for children two to 12 years of age and they have submitted an order for all Kosher vitamins.
For elderly patients who need to take several different pills at different times of the day, Pulse offers a blister-package organizer that is easy to read and easy to follow, and helps to avoid mistakes.
The pharmacy is licensed to give New York State eye exams for driver’s licenses and they have on-site blood pressure screening.
Store hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Friday hours are 8 a.m. to two hours before sunset or 7 p.m. during the summer months. The pharmacy is closed on Saturdays and open Sundays.
