Business of the Week: Our Town Bagels & Bakery, Mahopac
Christina Evans’ town is Mahopac, where she has lived all her life and is active in the community.
And with her sister, Stephanie, she owns Our Town Bagels & Bakery, which opened in her hometown about 18 months ago. “We’re really into the community,” she said.
Evans said she and her sister are especially active with the local sports teams, such as providing donations of bagels. Many of her customers play sports locally, she said. “We try to get involved as much as we can,” she said.
Evans said last week that even though Our Town is the first business she and her sister have owned, they are not new to the facility. “We used to work here when it was City Limits Bagel Café,” she noted. “We just kind of liked the business and the people.”
Most of Old Town’s loyal customer base lives in Mahopac and elsewhere in Putnam County, Evans said.
Customers have a wide selection of bagels and cream cheeses to choose from. Evans said there are typically nine varieties of cream cheese available and 15 types of bagels, which are baked at the store. Also baked on the premises are other items like muffins, croissants and “old fashioned donut, which we’re known for,” Evans said. “They’re donuts that come in muffin form.”
Some of the other store-made items include salads and creams cheese spreads, Evans said.
Old Town offers several sandwiches including six different grilled cheeses and particularly popular are their egg sandwiches, Evans said. For example the “Number Two” egg sandwich includes ham, bacon, sausage, pepper jack cheese, onion, hot sauce, two eggs and hash brown potatoes, Evans said. “That’s very poplar,” she said, adding Old Town’s omelets are also customer favorites.
Evans said among her personal favorites from her business include bagels with vegetable cream cheese and for lunch, the tuna, cranberry, apple walnut salad.
Being a local resident owning a business in the community where most of her customers live means a lot to Evans. “Most of them are our friends and then they talk highly about us so we get other people coming in,” she said.
Evans said among the keys to the success of her new business include the quality of the bagels sold, customer service and the speed of service. “We’re really quick. People come in and they want to get in and out,” she said.
