Business Profile: NOW Hair Salon, Mahopac
Cutting and designing hair has been a lifelong passion for Mary Heady.
For approximately 20 years and at various salons, Heady has been a hairdresser that women (and men) in the area have been going to in order to get the best look. Between graduating from college with a business degree and then raising four children, the Mahopac native has always cut hair. And though it was always in the back of her mind, Heady finally has a place to of her own called NOW Hair Salon.
“It just felt right,” Heady said of the timing.
Besides the typical haircut, Heady offers highlights, foils, coloring, blowouts, keratins, piercings, styling, perms and straightening at her new studio along Route 6 in Mahopac. Heady constantly keeps up with the latest trend, keeping her customers looking fresh.
“Friendly, stylish, up-to-date hair for both women, and men,” she said, noting she’s always open to new things and complete makeovers.
Heady knew from a young age she had a natural talent for doing hair well and connecting with people easily. She used to do her fraternal twin sister’s hair on a consistent basis.
“As teenagers, we would mess around and I’d do her hair,” Heady said.
Growing up with seven siblings in Mahopac, Heady was the only one that had any interest or aptitude toward hair design. But her parents still wanted her to be skilled in something else, so she graduated from Pace University with a business degree.
After high school she got her license then a job cutting hair at a mall salon and has been to many other salons after that.
“My heart was always in doing hair,” Heady said. “After seeing all sides of the fence, I realized my heart was with hair.”
Heady was offered recently to teach at the Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES cosmetology school, the same place she learned the basics as a teenager, but had to decline because she opened up her business.
Heady’s most recent stop before owning NOW Hair Salon was right down the street at Salon Amore. Heady mentioned how she worked with Maria of Salon Amore for years and called her a great mentor and friend.
“We had a lot of great times together,” Heady said. “It was time for us to be on our own and do our own thing.”
Heady said she approaches cutting hair by making sure the person will feel beautiful and create a look that truly fits them. Some customers don’t even realize the style they’re capable of. That’s where Heady, a creative person great at her craft, steps in.
“If you look good, you feel good,” she said. “If your hair looks good, you feel good and I think some people just need direction and I can see the beauty in everyone.”
