Business Profile: Northeast Dental, Yorktown
Yorktown resident Dr. Amanda Wiechert had no difficulty choosing what she wanted to do for a living.
“I always wanted to be a dentist, ever since I was in sixth grade,” Wiechert said last week in her new office at Northeast Dental in the Underhill Plaza Shopping Center in Yorktown. “I just made it happen.”
Wiechert has been practicing dentistry since 2004. “I love it,” she said. “I enjoy working with my hands and I also enjoy interacting with the patients And so what I’ve found over the years is I’ve developed a relationship with a lot of these patients where it’s not just about their mouth,” she said. “It’s also kind of talking to them, finding out what’s going on in their lives. And a lot of times patients will really open up and we just have good conversations.” She added that conversation is a good way to put her patients at ease.
“One of the most rewarding things for me is dealing with patients who are really apprehensive. That’s a really common thing in dentistry. A lot of people are afraid of going to the dentist. And sometimes it goes back to they had a bad experience as a child. So it kind of scarred them for life,” she said. “We try to take a little more time with those patients, trying to make them as comfortable as possible. And then over the course of treatment a lot of those patients end up being my most loyal and best patients. They just needed to get over that fear When we’re able to do that it’s very rewarding.”
Northeast Dental has been open for about a month on Commerce Street in Yorktown. She formerly worked in a group practice in Yorktown. “I decided that I wanted to start my own practice,” she said. “It’s a nice central location.”
Wiechert said her patients reside in Yorktown and the surrounding area, including Putnam County. “We’ve actually had a lot of good response from people coming to this office,” she said.
Wiechert, who said she is a general dentist, said she specializes in working with children and seniors. For seniors who have mobility issues she goes to such facilities as nursing homes to denture repairs, she said.
Wiechert said she is comfortable working with children. “The other thing is that most kids, like adults too, have a fear of the unknown,” she said. “Se we try to take our time and explain everything to them so they know exactly what to expect.” She added that she answers children’s questions.
