Business Profile: Mahopac Golf and Beach Club
The Mahopac Golf and Beach Club is known for its high quality golf course, its luscious greens and its manicured lakefront beach that provides envious views of Lake Mahopac. But what most people never realized it is another magical word as well… affordable.
“We offer several different types of memberships,” said Maria Sanyshyn, chief operations officer and general manager of the club, which is located at 601 North Lake Boulevard in Mahopac. “We currently have a small, active roster that is becoming increasingly a younger membership.”
In addition to its traditional membership, the club offers a step-up membership, which is ideal for the young professional.
“It is meant to engage young professionals who are at the beginning of their earning potential at an affordable rate,” said Sanyshyn. “They can enjoy full benefits of the club and as they get more comfortable in their earnings potential they have already become an active member in the club.”
Going after the young families was a conscience move by the board of directors.
“We are a family-oriented club,” said Sanyshyn. “We offer junior clinics and have a new women’s program.”
Terence Hughes, the head golf instructor at Mahopac Golf and Beach Club agrees.
“We have three PGA professionals on staff to encourage the members to play,” he said. “We run junior golf clinics and are the home course for the Mahopac High School golf team. When our members see the young ones take a good shot, they will raise from their seats on the patio and applaud them.”
Mahopac Golf and Beach Club also offers the non-golf enthusiast a membership.
“We have a social membership that allows someone use of the beach and to come to all of our various social events and to have dinner here on Friday nights,” said Sanyshyn. “Even if you are not a golfer you can participate in the club activities.”
The 5,000 square foot beach property, which has two lifeguards stationed during the season, is open to club members Tuesday through Sunday from Memorial Day to Labor Day. In recent years the club has updated the grounds by building a show facility and offering a place for members to keep kayaks ad rowboats. This year the club is adding a snack shack for members to get refreshments at.
“We are committed to making the club better and better,” said Sanyshyn. “But we do it smartly. Unlike other clubs that have gone bankrupt for building $15 million clubhouses, we renovate what we have and only build what we can afford. That is how we have stayed financially sound for over 100 years.”
A certain benefit to any membership, is the edible creations of executive chef Julie Sawyer. Sawyer sets a high standard in her kitchen and is out to entice the palate of the members.
“We are always looking to engage the memberships,” said Sawyer. “I like to do all kinds of menus: Asian, French and American.”
Sawyer’s cuisines are so delicious that even non-members choose to host events that are catered by the club.
To kickoff the opening of the beach for the season, the club is hosting a special open house on its lakefront property on North Lake Boulevard on Saturday, May 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tours of the club facilities will also be available and refreshments will be served.
Reservations to the open house can be made at membership@mahopacgolfclub.com.
