Business Profile: Lakeland Deli, Shrub Oak
Partners Tommy Jageman and Marisa Bratberg are deli veterans, with both being in the business for nearly three decades.
“It’s what we know,” Jageman said last week.
Last fall, the duo renovated their East Main Street location, the former site of Shrub Oak Delicatessen, and they re-opened the building in June as the Lakeland Deli. Jageman and Bratberg formerly owned a deli in Hawthorne.
Lakeland Deli offers a large selection of items, including their “Special Sandwiches.” The most popular Special Sandwich is the “Awesome Ash,” which features a chicken cutlet, bacon, cheddar cheese, and ranch and hot sauces. Other special sandwiches include the “Viking,” which is ham, turkey, roast beef, American cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo, and the “Lakeland Special,” which consists of grilled chicken, Monterey Jack cheese, sautéed spinach and balsamic vinegar.
“Everything’s homemade,” Jageman emphasized.
Lakeland Deli also offers a variety of breakfast sandwiches and omelets, a salad bar, soups and a wide array of hot foods. “We have an excellent cook (Sergio DelRosario) in the back who can prepare anything who throws out surprises every day,” Jageman said.
The best seller among Lakeland Deli’s breakfast sandwiches is “The Sloppy Sam,” which includes two eggs, chili, hash browned potatoes and cheddar cheese.
A popular seasonal item is the deli’s cider donuts, which are homemade and hot apple cider. “We started to do the cider donuts a couple of weeks ago on the weekends and it seems to be a big hit,” Jageman said.
The eatery also provides catering services, selling wedges and hot foods.
The name for the deli is obvious. It is located within walking distance of the Lakeland School District’s administration building and Lakeland High School is nearby.
“There’s a lot of foot traffic. There’s a lot of road traffic. So we thought it would be a good spot,” Jageman explained.
Jageman said he and his partner have one simple goal for Lakeland Deli. “Just to be successful,” he said.
What do the partners get from the deli industry? “We take pride in what we put out. Take pride in what goes out the door,” Jageman said. “We’re hands-on. We try to keep an eye on every sandwich and every half of pound of salad that goes out the door.”
