Business Profile: Health & Harmony Massage and Wellness Center, Brewster
When you are looking for peace and tranquility, even if just for a moment, in your life consider Health & Harmony Massage and Wellness Center in Brewster.
Heather Soss, a Brewster native, opened Health & Harmony to offer the community she loves a place to relax. The center, which offers massage, Reiki, acupuncture and a weekly meditation circle, is located at 2392 Route 6 so it is convenient to clients, but it is also in a private building so it is quiet and peaceful.
“From the moment I walked into the cute, little building that I am in now I just knew that the energy was right and that this was the place for me to start my business,” said Soss. “In fact, almost everyone who walks through our doors comments on how peaceful the place is.”
Soss opened up Health & Harmony in July after working at Finger Lakes School of Massage for two years following her own graduation. Working at the school gave Soss an advantage to opening up her own business because she was able to recruit the students she saw potential in.
“I was able to recruit the best of the best,” she said.
Joining Soss, who is a licensed massage therapist and Reiki master, are three other massage therapists and an acupuncturist who are all fully licensed and certified.
“They are all professional, experienced, nurturing people who are just great to work with,” said Soss.
Soss became passionate about massage therapy as a teenager after she started to get treatments herself.
“I would get massages and Reiki treatments during times when I felt that I was suffering from both the emotional and physical effects of excessive stress and every time I noticed that I would feel tremendous relief both during and afterwards,” said Soss. “The pain and tension in my shoulders would sometimes be unbearable and often give me terrible headaches so I always appreciated the value of massage, but it wasn’t until a few years after I graduated from college that I realized that I could help people in the same way that my massage therapists had always helped me.”
So Soss decided to learn the techniques that had been so helpful to her so that she could help other people.
Heath & Harmony offers integrative massages that combine several different modalities into one massage and can include Swedish, deep tissue, trigger point therapy, connective tissue therapy, and sports massage depending on what that person’s particular needs and expressed desires are at that time.
“I recommend that everyone receive a massage on a monthly basis or at the very least every other month to help counteract the effects of stress and to help keep the muscle tissue in healthy condition,” said Soss. “If people are dealing with a specific medical condition or are suffering from pain or excessive tension it is probably a good idea for them to come more frequently in the beginning until the pain reduces to a manageable level and then they can come and a monthly or every other month basis for management.”
Health & Harmony accepts insurance plans that cover massage therapy. In addition, the center charges the same price for a massage no matter what style is used.
Soss recommends incorporating Reiki and meditation into one’s routine every once in a while in order to interrupt the constant stimulation and stress cycle and to introduce balance and calm into the mind instead.
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing and the balancing/cleansing of one’s energy.
“Receiving a Reiki treatment is an incredibly soothing experience that leaves you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated,” said Soss. “The client remains completely clothed throughout the session and the practitioner can either choose to do it hands free or with the gentle laying of hands at designated points along the body. It is so gentle that it can be done on even the frailest of ill people and can provide them with immense relief.”
