Business Plan in Place to Save Hanover Hilltop
The Westchester County Board of Legislators has approved a multi-year business plan to maintain Hilltop Hanover Farm in Yorktown. County Legislator Michael Kaplowitz said the initiative, which was included as part of the restoration of funds in the final 2011 county budget, will provide the 180-acre farm on Hanover Street with close to $1 million over the next four to five years. “It’s a gift. We don’t want to lose it,” Kaplowitz said. Westchester County bought Hilltop Hanover in 2003 as part of an open space purchase to serve as an environmental education center and to protect the watershed. About 50 acres is used for agricultural purposes with a forest maintained on the remaining portion. The property’s trails are open to the public year round and there is a season farm stand.
