Business of the Week: Hair A Fair Salon
As the snow begins to melt away and sunshine becomes more prevalent in the skies of Putnam County, one thing may be for sure—it’s time for a new haircut. Just in time for a date on Valentine’s Day and on cue with the cool spring breezes that allows any one person to let her or his lovely locks out, a salon Fair Street has come under new ownership to help your hair unravel from those cold winter months.
Hair A Fair in Carmel has just come under new ownership, and the two sisters that have taken on the salon’s operations are welcoming new business of all ages now and throughout the spring season. The co-owners said they are happy to set up shop in Putnam County—a place where small business blooms in one, interconnected community.
“Carmel seems to be very community-oriented, so it’s been nice to be in a place where small business support each other,” said Hair-A-Fair’s co-owner Karen Gallagher.
Karen and her sister, Mary Joyce, recently purchased Hair A Fair from its previous owner Louis Albano. Since their start this past January, Karen and Mary Joyce have seen an influx of regular customers and newly interested residents and hope the spring months will propel them to long-term success.
“We’ve had a handful of new people, who’ve seen our ads or were recommended by a current client,” Mary Joyce. “We’re happy with what we have so far.”
Mary Joyce, who takes care of the haircutting while her sister Karen takes of the bookkeeping, has had an interest in cutting hair ever since she’s little. Practicing on her cousin when she was 10 years old and then furthering her education after high school, Mary Joyce said she was happy to have control over her own business.
“So far it’s been nice to have this salon to ourselves,” Mary Joyce said. “I love the environment—that’s the best part for me because I like to come to work and be happy. I’d rather make less money and love what I do than be like ‘god, I have to go to work today.”
Hair A Fair currently provides 20 percent discounts every weekday, with a 10 percent student discount on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. A 20 percent military, police and fire discount is available on all weekdays. The salon currently has a “Super Bowl Special”—if you come in wearing a team shirt or jersey, you’ll receive 20 percent off on a cut or 10 percent off a color. The offer expires Super Bowl Sunday.
