Big Lots to Fill Vacant Circuit City Space in Cortlandt
A new retailer expects to fill the space left vacant five years ago by Circuit City on Route 6 in Cortlandt by the holiday season.
Big Lots, which advertises itself as the “nation’s largest broadline closeout retailer,” picked up a building permit from Cortlandt last week to make renovations to the 27,500-square-foot building.
Cortlandt Supervisor Linda Puglisi said Circuit City was tied up in bankruptcy court with the owners of the property for several years and recently reached a court settlement.
“I’m happy something is in there,” Puglisi said. “It was upsetting to have it empty and vacant. People used to ask me about it all the time. It’s going to be very attractive.”
The store is expected to generate between 60 and 80 jobs. Big Lots, which was founded in 1967, operates more than 1,400 retail stores in 48 states, including 54 in New York. The nearest stores are located in Nanuet, Newburgh and Wappingers Falls.
Big Lots sells a broad range of high quality, brand name products, including consumables, seasonal items, furniture, housewares, toys, electronics, home décor, tools and gifts.
