Big Lots Opens First Westchester Store in Cortlandt

A discount retail store marked the recent opening of its first Westchester County location last Friday with an official ribbon cutting ceremony in Cortlandt.

Big Lots, which operates more than 1,450 stories in 48 states, moved into the 20,300-square-foot building left vacant several years ago by bankrupt Circuit City on Route 6, sandwiched between ShopRite and Kohl’s.

District Manager Todd Rosenberg said the store employs 72 full and part-time workers and offers a variety of national brand merchandise at discount prices.

“We know everyone loves a bargain and that’s what you’ll find at a Big Lots,” said Rosenberg, flanked by several employees and local officials. “There’s unexpected closeouts that will knock your socks off. I think we’re a great alternative to Walmart and Target.”

Cortlandt Supervisor Linda Puglisi said filling the large storefront would be a boost to the local economy.

“We’re so excited about Big Lots being here,” she said. “It employs so many wonderful people in our community. We look forward to you being here for many, many years.”

Immediately benefiting from Big Lots choosing Cortlandt was Walter Panas High School, which was the recipient of a $2,500 donation from the retailer. Panas Principal Susan Strauss and Lakeland Superintendent of Schools Dr. George Stone were on hand to gladly accept the contribution.
