Ball Pushes Pension Forfeiture for Felon Officials
Sen. Greg Ball has introduced legislation that would strip public officials of their pensions if they are convicted of a crime related to their office, and the senator said Friday he expects the bill to pass in the Senate.
Ball held a press conference Friday at his office in Brewster announcing the legislation. He was joined by several other local elected officials.
“It is almost mind-boggling that we allow those who violate the public trust in the greatest sense to continue to collect, at taxpayer expense, a public pension,” Ball said.
Ball’s predecessor, Vincent Leibell, pleaded guilty last year to felony corruption charges days after resigning from the Senate. The legislation, though, would not be retroactive; only those convicted of a crime after the law is passed will be subject to pension forfeiture.
