It’s time to unveil the winners of our winter Teams of the Season, generously sponsored by Club Fit.
These teams have demonstrated exceptional dedication and teamwork throughout the season, embodying the spirit of excellence in sports.

Boys Team of the Season:
HALDANE Hoops
The Blue Devils compiled a neat and tidy 21-4 season, returning to the NYSPHSAA Class C finals for the second year in a row, third time since 2016, and while Haldane fell just short of its overall goals the team represented Section 1 and the Examiner region with the grit and sportsmanship we’ve come to expect from Coach Joe Virgadamo’s Blue Devils. Others considered were the Peekskill boys hoops team – the feel-good story of the winter – and the NYSPHSAA champion Horace Greeley swimmers.
Girls Team of the Season:
WALTER PANAS Hoops
Walter Panas came within two points of winning consecutive NYSPHSAA Class A titles after compiling a 24-4 record behind the dynamic 1-2 punch of All-NYS juniors Cadence Nicholas and Sofia Tavarez, who helped Panas provide an epic battle against Catholic Central in a 64-62 state final setback. Others considered were the Putnam Valley girls’ hoops team. The Tigers overcame a trying 0-4 start and the loss of NYS Class B Player of the Year Eva DeChent to win their fourth consecutive Section 1 title before returning to the NYSPHSAA Final 4 where the Tigers (19-7) were defeated by eventual NYS champion Utica-Notre Dame.
We applaud these remarkable teams for their outstanding performance and positive impact.
