After Successful Kick Off Wellness Week Continues
The block on Court Street between Martine Avenue and Main Street in the heart of downtown White Plains was the location once again for a fun and informative outdoor event for White Plains families.
Sunday afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m. rousing music invited people to a Crunch Fitness Zumba class, dancing and other aerobic movements during the Wellness Week 2013 Kick Off.
Packed with vendors and attendees, the celebration initiated a week-long series sponsored by The City of White Plains, White Plains Cares Coalition, White Plains Hospital, New York State OASAS, and SAMHSA.
Each weekday from Sunday Sept. 15 to Monday Sept. 23 is dedicated to one of eight dimensions of wellness concerning the body, mind and spirit.
Monday, Sept. 16 is Emotional Wellness Day for coping effectively with life and creating satisfying relationships. Tuesday, Sept. 17 is Intellectual Wellness Day, recognizing creative abilities and finding ways to expand knowledge and skills. Wednesday, Sept. 18 is Physical Wellness Day dedicated to understanding differing abilities; recognizing the need for physical activity, diet, sleep and nutrition. Thursday, Sept. 19 is Financial Wellness Day for satisfaction with current and future financial wellness. Friday, Sept. 20 is Occupational Wellness Day for personal satisfaction and enrichment derived from one’s work. Saturday, Sept. 21 is Spiritual Wellness Day for expanding our sense of purpose and meaning in life. Sunday, Sept. 22 is Environmental Wellness Day promoting good health by occupying pleasant, stimulating environments, and Monday, Sept. 23 is Social Wellness Day for developing a sense of connection, belonging, and well-developed support system.
Each day has a number of programs scheduled at various locations in White Plains. Visit www.wpwellnessweek.com for the complete schedule.
One program of interest sponsored by the White Plains Youth Bureau’s Growing White Plains Community Gardening Program is a container gardening workshop at Gardella Park, Sunday, Sept. 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. This event will be held rain or shine.
In a Wellness Guide prepared by the White Plains Youth Bureau, Mayor Tom Roach writes that “The City of White Plains is committed to developing a ‘Healthy and Fit for Life’ community.”
The Guide prepared in English and Spanish defines wellness as an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence. Throughout its pages readers are encouraged to assess their own wellness in each of the eight wellness areas. Recommendations, tips for parents and resources are also provided.
An historic event is the Inter-Faith Forum at White Plains Public Library, Saturday, Sept. 21 at 10:30 a.m. Leaders from various faiths will speak about the importance of spirituality in achieving optimal wellness.
