Lawler’s Support for the SAVE Act is Critical to Protect Integrity of Voting

We are part of The Trust Project

Thank you, Congressman Mike Lawler, for supporting the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. This legislation finally targets irregular voting, in part by requiring proof of citizenship to vote. These common-sense measures should be embraced as protecting democracy and ensuring free and fair elections.

The current identification requirements on the voter registration form are insufficient. “Are you a US citizen?” requires no documentation (and 87,000 new IRS agents suggest that people lie to the government.) A driver’s license number is acceptable ID. Anyone can get a driver’s license, whether they are eligible to vote or not. And that’s it.

Allowing non-citizens to vote, even in local elections, is an attack on American democracy. Their votes water down the votes of citizens. In time, non- citizen voting will become a slippery slope, rendering citizenship meaningless.

If we can require proof of vaccination to enter public spaces, we can ensure that all those eligible have proof of citizenship to vote.
