Putnam Health Commissioner Nesheiwat Honored for COVID Work
The New York State Association of County Health Officials has recognized Putnam County Health Commissioner Michael J. Nesheiwat, MD, for his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Nesheiwat was also honored for his dedication to public health and outstanding service to the community during NYSACHO’s Annual Public Health Leadership Conference in October.
“I’m glad to learn that Dr. Nesheiwat got the recognition from his peers that he so greatly deserved,” County Executive MaryEllen Odell said. “He and his staff worked non-stop to successfully protect our county residents from an unknown public health threat. His guidance and expertise were invaluable during a very difficult time.”
While grateful for the acknowledgement, Dr. Nesheiwat said: “It’s all about teamwork.”
He wrote an email to his staff noting that the recognition really belonged to the entire Putnam County Department of Health, and that when he accepted the award, he did so on their behalf.
“During the height of the COVID–19 pandemic, and continuing today, you each proceed to be such an integral part in Putnam’s response to the pandemic,” Nesheiwat wrote. “While conducting your everyday regular county duties, that protect and ensure the health and safety of Putnam County residents, you also investigated cases, conducted COVID tracing and ran highly efficient and successful vaccine PODS.”
