Those of us who are old enough can remember the Willie Horton ads devised by Lee Atwater to help George H.W. Bush win his presidential campaign against Michael Dukakis in 1988. Although Atwater eventually regretted the overtly racist dog whistles of the ads, Mike Lawler seems to have no such compunction about spreading misinformation and fear about Mondaire Jones.

The ubiquitous ads, endlessly running on television and computer platforms, show Jones with a robber’s bandanna and a bullhorn, shouting to “Defund the Police,” portraying this centrist and moderate candidate as an anarchist thug.

While in Congress, Mondaire Jones helped deliver record law enforcement funding to support our police officers and keep families safe. He championed, and continues to champion, common-sense gun safety legislation and supports assault weapons bans, universal background checks and red flag laws.

These are values that everyone in our community shares – especially the police – and Mondaire Jones shares them as well.
