Over the past 50 years, we’ve seen incredible progress for female athletes across the country, which is why it’s disheartening to hear of two initiatives in Albany that could roll back those gains.

The first, Proposition 1, which will appear on the Nov. 5 ballot, would allow biological males to claim a constitutional right to compete in girls’ and women’s sports in New York. The second, a proposal by the Board of Regents, would permanently combine genders in high school sports, denying many young women the chance to compete and potentially earn college scholarships for their athletic abilities.

State Senate candidate Gina Arena is rightly making this issue a priority in her campaign against progressive state Sen. Pete Harkham, who supports allowing biological males on girls’ and women’s teams. As a mother of six daughters, Arena is standing up for fairness in women’s sports, and I believe she is correct in advocating for a level playing field for young female athletes.

Why do girls always seem to get the short end of the stick? Isn’t it time we moved past this?
