Time for New York State to Power Up Renewables, Including Offshore Wind

As our country reels in the aftermath of two destructive hurricanes, it’s clear the climate crisis is intensifying with every day that goes by. Hurricane Milton went from a tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane in just over 48 hours because of ocean warming. Here in New York, the climate crisis is causing life-threatening hot summers and dangerous floods that will only get worse.
With one of the strongest climate laws in the country, New York can actually do something to address the climate crisis, and offshore wind is a critical part of this. It is absolutely imperative that Gov. Hochul and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority remain committed to aggressively developing offshore wind in New York.
New York needs to make up for lost time by awarding as many viable offshore wind projects as possible; doing so is an investment in both the state and the country’s future. The country has long looked to New York to be its leader and now is our opportunity to lead, transitioning the downstate New York grid away from gas and to clean, renewable energy that these offshore wind projects will provide.
Offshore wind is a tangible and crucial step toward fighting the climate crisis, creating jobs and stabilizing electricity prices for all New Yorkers in the process. As we all experience intensifying weather conditions that are changing how we live and work, our leaders need to act with urgency.
