Feminists’ Silence Against Proposition 1 is Hard to Explain

It’s shocking that more feminists aren’t speaking out against the Prop 1 amendment on the ballot this year. This carelessly worded proposal would have a significant detrimental effect on girls’ sports in New York. It would lay the constitutional groundwork for boys and biological males permanently competing against girls in high school athletics. Guess who’ll get the playing time, records and scholarships?
But it’s not just Prop 1. The New York State Board of Regents was also pushing a plan to merge girls’ and boys’ sports in the state. It only paused its plans after state Senate candidate Gina Arena issued a statewide news release alerting parents to the issue. Expect the board to pick this up again right after the election.
American feminists have achieved extraordinary successes over the past 40 years. Why on earth would we abandon girls now? Didn’t we tell them they could achieve anything they worked hard for? Didn’t we tell them the years of forced accommodation were over?
Instead, New York is telling them that female athletes don’t really matter. Boys need to be accommodated, so move aside. What kind of message is that?
