Robert Thomsen
Robert “Bobby” Thomsen, 91, an Essex, Conn. resident, passed away peacefully on June 4 at Portland Rehabilitation Center following a long illness.
Born on Nov. 8, 1932, Bobby was the son of the late Ernest and Jesse Thomsen. He married Marion Koslap of Hastings-on-Hudson in 1966. Marion predeceased him in 2001. After living in their marital home in Hastings-on-Hudson for over 30 years, Bobby moved to Essex, Conn. in 2002.
Bobby retired from the Scarsdale school system where he had been employed as the head custodian for Quaker Ridge Elementary School. He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy where he earned the position of radioman aboard the destroyer and minesweeper USS Rodman. He also spent several decades as a member of the Uniontown Hose Co. 2, Engine 45 for the Hastings-on-Hudson Volunteer Fire Department.
When time and weather permitted, he enjoyed being on the water, boating and fishing, especially when in the company of his brothers, Ernest (Roy), Kenneth (Ken) and Richard (Richie). A lover of music, Bobby was a regular fixture at the Griswold Inn in Essex on Saturday nights where he could be found singing along with the piano, played by John Banker, and dancing with anyone that needed a partner. He was cherished by his community and cared deeply for them in return.
Bobby is survived by his beloved brother, Ken Thomsen, and his wife, Lois, of Essex; his sister-in-law, Serena Thomsen, of Oxford, Pa.; his nephews, Brian Thomsen of Oxford, Pa. and Keith Thomsen of Lititz, Pa.; and his two nieces, Kimberly Thomsen of New York, N.Y. and Linda Thomsen of Houston. He was dearly loved by his family and his absence will leave a big void in our hearts.
A funeral service and celebration of Bobby’s life is planned for August. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Essex Veterans Memorial Hall, 3 Westbrook Rd., Centerbrook, Conn. 06409.
