In a letter titled “There Are Many Problems That Still Must Be Resolved With EVs,” (May 7-13 issue), the letter writer quoted a newspaper article without identifying the paper. An internet search revealed that the rather bizarre quote that EVs “are a market loser, the EV market was created by government, social media, wild disease frenzy, far flung thinking and the irrational chasing of utopia” was originally published in The Epoch Times. According to Wikipedia “The Epoch Times is a far-right international multi-language newspaper and media company affiliated with the Falun Gong new religious movement.”

Moving from the far right toward the left side of the political spectrum it becomes widely accepted that the push for EVs is based on the need to rapidly address the climate change crisis. The combination of EVs and an electric grid run on renewable energy will allow motor vehicles to be driven without carbon dioxide emissions.

Probably nobody knowledgeable about the American automotive industry expected the transition from gasoline-powered motor vehicles to EVs to occur without some hiccups. In the U.S., problems include the relatively high cost of EVs and a lack of a sufficient number of charging stations. China, the world leader in production of EVs, seems to have addressed both of these concerns so perhaps there is reason to believe that the U.S. can soon overcome these problems.

The world is running out of time to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to avoid some of the worst consequences of climate change and, therefore, making a rapid transition from gasoline-powered motor vehicles to EVs is imperative.
