🎵 PRELUDE: Vámanos Pa’l Monte
In English, “Vámanos Pa’l Monte” means “Let’s go to the mountain.” The 1971 song is “one of the most important recordings of Eddie Palmieri, who arguably was one of the foremost Latin pianists of the second half of the 20th century.”
Eddie Palmieri is an American Grammy Award-winning pianist, bandleader, musician, and composer of Puerto Rican ancestry who grew up in the Bronx. He is the founder of the bands La Perfecta, La Perfecta II, and Harlem River Drive. The legendary 85-year-old salsa musician has been performing to live audiences since he was eight years old!
Not only did I choose this song because of its danceable and joyful rhythms, but also because the lyrics remind me that the fall season is right around the corner. It’s the time of the year when city folk drive up north to enjoy Hudson Valley’s beautiful changing landscape. “Vámos Pa’l Monte” literally means “Let’s go to the mountain,” and the lyrics continue, “to the mountain to have a good time.” He describes leaving the city and heading to the countryside to enjoy the open space and fresh air and to have fun.
The Lehman Center for the Performing Arts in the Bronx is kicking off its season with Eddie Palmieri and his Salsa Orchestra on Saturday, September 17, at 8:00 pm.
