Tour de Putnam Rescheduled to Oct. 16
The 13th annual Tour de Putnam has been rescheduled to Oct. 16 from Aug. 28. The yearly cycling event was moved due to severe weather threats from oncoming Hurricane Irene.
“We were concerned about the safety of our riders and made the decision to move the Tour de Putnam until Oct. 16,” said Putnam County Visitor’s Bureau director Valerie Hickman.
The event, which was set to kick off during the morning hours of Aug. 28, will still begin and end at Putnam County Veterans Memorial Park on Gipsy Trail Road in Carmel.
“We’re fortunate that the park had another date open for October,” Hickman said.
Each starting time will remain at its designated hour. The 100-mile and 75-mile loops start from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.; the 50-mile loop starts from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.; the 15-mile loop starts from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.; and mountain bike loops will begin at 9:30 a.m.
Attendees can still take part in pre-registration at www.visitputnam.org. Cyclists who pre-register pay $25 and those registering on the day of the event pay $30.
According to the National Weather Service, category three Hurricane Irene is expected to reach New England by Sunday afternoon. For more information, visit http://www.governor.ny.gov/.
