Upcoming School Board Races Shape Up in Local Districts
Half of the six local school districts will have contested Board of Education races on Tuesday, May 17.
In the Lakeland, Yorktown and Hendrick Hudson school districts, four candidates will be vying for three available seats. The term for each seat in each district is three years.
In Lakeland, three incumbents have filed petitions for reelection. Steven Korn, who was first elected in 2001, will be running for a sixth term. Former board President Elizabeth Kogler, who joined the board in 2006, is seeking a fourth term, as is Shrub Oak Athletic Club President Steve Rosen.
Hoping to upset the apple cart is first-time candidate Mike Sancimino.
In neighboring Yorktown, two of three incumbents up for reelection are running again, Thomas Donatelli and Cheryl Reynolds. Board Vice President Karen Corrado has decided not to seek a new term.
Looking to join the board for the first time are Reshmi Bose and Andrew Pecunia.
Meanwhile, in Hendrick Hudson, two longtime incumbents are moving on—Marion Walsh, who has been a trustee since 2007, and Carson Jacobs, a trustee since 2010.
The lone incumbent in the race is Carol Abraham. Joining her on the ballot will be Lisa Anderson, William Morris and William Oricchio.
In the Ossining, Peekskill and Somers districts, all eligible incumbents are running unopposed.
Bill Kress and Lisa Murray will be the only names on the Ossining ballot. In Peekskill, Maria Pereira, one of the founding members of the Peekskill Education Foundation, Michael Simpkins, who performed a stirring rendition of the National Anthem during the Opening Day ceremonies of the Lapolla Little League, and Jillian Villon, a 2008 Peekskill High School graduate, will all be returning to the board.
The same situation will take place in Somers where board Vice President Donna Rosenblum, Ifay Chang and Joseph Marra are not being challenged.
Polls in all districts are open May 17 from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
