Business Profile: My HR Department, Yorktown
If you are the owner of a small or mid-sized business and need services such as employee recruitment and terminations or want to know how to deal with new government regulations but do not want to hire a full-time human resource employee, what can you do?
Yorktown resident Marc Roberts has an answer.
Roberts started My HR Department in town about a year ago to provide services for small and medium sized businesses with his partner, Andrea Portnoy, who also resides in Yorktown.
“We’ve been in the staffing business for the last 20 years and we saw that there was a huge underserved community of small to medium sized businesses that were not getting their HR needs taken care of,” Roberts explained last week.
Roberts said My HR Department provides services for companies with two to 50 employees and their owners who do not have time to take on human resources tasks. “They’re busy working on their business. They don’t have a human resources person on board full-time and there’s a lot of issues and needs that are going unmet,” he said.
Like many of the clients they serve, Roberts and Portnoy lead a small business of their own. “We’ve assembled a team of really highly qualified HR professionals,” Roberts said.
My HR Department has clients in various fields, including laws firms, an architectural and metal contractor and a non-for-profit organization. Its clients are located throughout the tri-state area. “In time, we hope we can maybe take this concept national,” Roberts said. “There’s a vast need out there. What we offer is personalized, customized service. There are a lot of companies out there that are offering HR consulting. They may be part of a large payroll company. They may be part of a large professional employment organization. There’s even insurance companies that have spun off HR units. We provide immediate, personal service.”
“You’re not dialing a 1-800 number every time you have a problem,” he added. “We have very skilled HR professionals that have been working in some very large organizations and have done some great things in their careers. We provide that personal level of service. We meet with the clients. We go out to clients’ sites. We customize things.”
My HR Department offers a wide variety of services, Roberts said. “Anything from helping them get their first employee, to compliance issues to legal matters” is provided by his company, Roberts said. His company offers “anything that involves the hiring and maintaining a workforce,” Roberts added. “We’re there when you need us and in the background when you don’t.”
