Driver Jailed for Killing Ossining Man on Route 9A
A Rockland County woman was sentenced Friday to one to three years in prison for killing an Ossining man last September on Route 9A as he was crossing the roadway to put up campaign signs.
Michelle Sergio, 39, of Nanuet, pled guilty in May to two counts of vehicular manslaughter in the second degree, Class D felonies, and two counts of driving while intoxicated, Class A misdemeanors, in the death of John Mangialardi, 55, a well-known local defense attorney who was running for Ossining town justice when he was struck and killed on September 3, 2013 at about 10:15 p.m.
Sergio, who was found to have a blood alcohol level of .12 at the time of the incident, according to the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office, was on her way to work with at-risk children at a social service agency in Ossining when her Nissan Altima hit Mangialardi at the intersection of 9A and Route 134.
Mangialardi was running as a Republican/Conservative against Democratic incumbent Town Justice Nancy Quinn Koba and the two were slated to run in an Independence Party primary on September 10 of last year.
He was a former Assistant D.A. in the Bronx and was a partner in the law firm of Mangialardi & Berardino in Hartsdale. He was a Lt. Colonel in the 5th Legal Support Detachment, 56th Brigade, N.Y. Guard and had been a JAG Officer for more than 14 years. He was an active parishioner of St. Augustine Church.
