Breast Cancer Symposium at Putnam Hospital Center
After the initial shock of a breast cancer diagnosis, where do you turn?
Patients who have a complete understanding of their disease and treatment plan can have improved outcomes. Unfortunately, many do not know about the “patient specific” approach used in formulating the best treatment plan.
Putnam Hospital Center is looking to change that. A team of physicians on the Putnam Hospital medical staff and clinicians will present “When the Diagnosis is Breast Cancer – How Putnam Hospital Can Help” from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 13 at the hospital’s Michael T. Weber Auditorium, 670 Stoneleigh Ave.
The symposium will include a panel of experts who will go through the process of seeing a patient through from diagnosis to treatment to survivorship. Presenters will discuss the roles surgery, radiology, radiation oncology, hematology oncology, pathology, genetic counseling and clinical nurse oncology play in cancer care.
Panelists include breast surgeon Dr. Lyda Rojas, radiologist Dr. Ben Hentel, radiation oncologist, Dr. Thomas Mazzilli, hematologist/oncologist Dr. Lev Davidson, pathologist Dr. Vinita Agarwal, genetic counselor Kelli Mayfarth and oncology clinical navigator, Dianne Toscano.
“When the diagnosis of breast cancer is given to patients, the initial reaction is one of despair. However, when they realize the step-by-step planning that goes into it and the role they play in their treatment, the patients feel empowered,” Rojas said. “This symposium is an important service to inform the community that individualized breast cancer care is available to them at Putnam Hospital Center.”
There will be a question-and-answer session after each presentation.
The panel will also perform a “mock tumor board” to demonstrate to the public how a medical team designs a course of treatment for individual patients.
A continental breakfast will be served.
