Boil Water Advisory Issued in Ossining Through Sunday
About 5,000 residents in the Village of Ossining are being instructed to boil their water before drinking it or using it for food preparation at least through Sunday following a water main break Thursday night on Route 134 near Route 9A.
The affected area includes streets as far west as Route 9, as far east as Morningside Drive, as far north as Hawkes Avenue at Bridle Path Road, and as far south as Macy Road at Wolden Road. To check if a street is affected by the advisory, residents should contact the Village of Ossining Water Department at (914) 941-4661 or visit their website at www.villageofossining.org.
The boil water advisory was issued by the Westchester County Health Department to protect from potential contamination caused by ground water infiltration into water mains as a result of the reduction in water main pressure due to the water main break. Once the repairs are completed, water will be flushed from the mains through some fire hydrants in the area. Samples will then be taken and tested for coliform bacteria.
Residents are advised to boil water for a minimum of one minute prior to drinking it or preparing food, washing dishes by hand and brushing teeth. Restaurants, delis and all food service establishments in the area also must boil water. Residents can use bottled water as an alternative to boiling.
The advisory does not extend to bathing, washing clothes or using a dishwasher.
